OUR PROGRAMS
The Bay Area After-School All-Stars provide free, comprehensive, out-of-school programming for underserved youth, focusing on enriching the mind, body, and character of every child we serve, giving them the skills and self confidence needed to more fully engage in the core school day. This engagement leads to greater success in both school and life.
Our program is free and operates Monday through Friday from the time school is out (dependant on the school’s schedule) until 6:00pm, and is built around three central components: Homework Center & Academic Hour, Enrichment Classes, and Sports & Fitness Programs.
Homework Center & Academic Hour: every student is required to participate in an hour of academic programming at least four days a week. During the homework period, All-Stars staff support students at a 20:1 ratio, and supplies are provided to assist with homework completion. Students are responsible for maintaining their weekly “Homework Completion Sheet”. This sheet allows our staff to communicate with parents just how much homework is completed during homework center, along with the student’s behavior for that day. Additionally, our staff has access (when available) to the school district’s parental internet viewer – allowing them to monitor homework assignments and completion rates as recorded by each student’s teacher. For students who finish their homework early, All-Stars provides academically enriching activities and self-paced supplemental curriculum for students to further improve their core academic skills.
Enrichment Classes: are offered in six to eight week sessions and are similar to “electives.” At our elementary sites, students rotate through all the classes offered by the staff. At middle school sites, “showcasing” happens the week prior to the new session where the staff present their class to groups of students and the students get to sign up for the classes that most interest them. At most middle school sites the schedule allows students the opportunity to take two enrichment classes per week (Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday). The Site Supervisor ultimately places students based on their attendance and behavior. ASAS staff develop curriculum based on student requests and topics that staff are passionate about teaching. Some popular titles include “Super Size Art”, “Crime Stoppers”, “Fierce & Fabulous”, “All-Stars Best Dance Crew”, “Top Chef”, and “Bust a Flow”. At the end of each session there is a Culminating Event, a gathering where school faculty, family, and friends can see what students learned throughout the session, usually in the form of performances and/or a recognition ceremony. Each class aligns to at least one California Academic Standard as well as addresses multiple intelligences, and the 41 Developmental Assets.
Sports & Fitness Programs: In addition to all students completing the Fit For Learning fitness curriculum, which teaches healthy eating and living habits, each student also participates in regular, structured physical activity throughout the week. Outside of this program, All-Stars offers “fun-petitive” sports leagues for elementary students and competitive sports leagues for middle school students. Participation in the sports programs is voluntary. While these sports programs entice many students to participate in the All-Stars program, we see these activities as vital to our program model, providing participants with the recommended amount of exercise they need each day while reinforcing their listening skills, sportsmanship, teamwork, and self confidence.
Leadership & Support Programs: All-Stars also provides a series of Leadership & Support Programs on our middle school campuses (with plans to expand these programs to our elementary sites in the coming years). Entourage, our signature leadership and service-learning program, allows students to participate in a variety of community service projects, and leadership development programs. The High School Transition Program prepares our eighth grade students and their parents to successfully prepare for and navigate the transition into high school. And our Counseling program matches students most at risk for school drop out with a counselor to help the student take full advantage of our programs and their core academic day. All-Stars is proud to offer these programs, unique in the after-school field, further enhancing our impact on the lives of the students we serve.
